What is causing my chevy 406 to blow smoke/ use oil under heavy acceleration?

consumes oil quickly if run hard. smoke only visible under heavy acceleration. fairly new bottom end, reused aluminum heads in good condition. wondering if ring gap is too large or if valve guides/seals are worn. how do i test to rule one or the other out?
